A cluster of little houses above one of the most spectacular gorges in the Canaries.
For a long time Masca could only be reached by mule track, and it still feels a little that way. A handful of stone houses cling to a rocky ridge, with green gorges plunging down to the Atlantic all around. The drive there is an adventure, the view worth every bend.
The most winding road on the island
From Callao Salvaje it is just under 50 minutes, and the last kilometres from Santiago del Teide are quite something: tight hairpins, oncoming traffic, breathtaking drops. Anyone prone to travel sickness is better off in the front seat. At the top waits a tiny village with a few cafés and viewpoints, from which the gorge opens like a green V down to the sea.
The famous gorge hike
The Barranco de Masca is considered one of the most beautiful hikes in Spain: a good three hours downhill through the gorge to a cove, from where a boat takes you back to Los Gigantes. Note: the path is only walkable with a booked ticket and sturdy footwear, and it is demanding. After rain it can be closed. If you prefer it quieter, simply enjoy Masca from above over a café con leche.
Best to be early
Parking is scarce and hopelessly full by midday. Set off early, then you have the viewpoints almost to yourself and the light is at its best. On the way back, a stop in Santiago del Teide or at the cliffs of Los Gigantes is worthwhile.
Frequently asked questions
Can you hike the Masca gorge without booking?
No. For the Barranco de Masca you need a timed ticket; visitor numbers are limited. Book in advance and check before the tour whether the path is open, it is closed after rain.
Is the drive difficult with a rental car?
The hairpins are narrow and winding, but well surfaced. Quite manageable with a little calm and care. If you would rather not drive yourself, take an excursion by bus or jeep.
